Founders' Story & Our Business Plan Highlights
Sisters Amanda and Dot Flanagan grew up in Southern Ohio, surrounded by creativity, community, and the belief that art has the power to bring people together. Inspired by their late mother’s vision of a makerspace—a place where artists could collaborate, learn, and grow—they set out to make that dream a reality.
Dot, a skilled graphic designer with over a decade of experience, has always had a passion for visual storytelling and hands-on creativity. Whether through digital design, 3D printing, painting, or crafting, she finds joy in making art accessible to others. Amanda, with a background in business administration, accounting, and tax preparation, brings the structure and strategy needed to turn their shared vision into a sustainable reality.
Together, they founded the Boneyfiddle Artist Collective (BAC) to support local artists, makers, and creatives by providing affordable workspaces, essential tools, and a thriving artistic community. Starting small with makers markets and pop-up events, their goal is to grow BAC into a full-scale nonprofit makerspace, complete with workshops, a tool library, and collaborative studio spaces.
For Amanda and Dot, BAC isn’t just a business—it’s a mission to empower artists, build a stronger creative economy, and honor their mother’s legacy. By creating a space where artists of all backgrounds can connect, experiment, and share their craft, they hope to inspire a new generation of makers in Portsmouth and beyond.
Mission:
Supporting artists through accessible spaces, tools,
and education.
The Boneyfiddle Artist Collective (BAC) is committed to supporting artists by providing accessible spaces, essential tools, and educational resources to help them thrive. In Portsmouth and Scioto County, many artists face significant challenges due to the lack of affordable workspaces, limited venues to sell their creations, and scarce access to necessary supplies. With the area’s poverty rate nearly double the national average, economic barriers often prevent creatives from pursuing their passions or turning their skills into sustainable careers. BAC’s mission is to bridge these gaps by establishing a community-driven creative hub where artists can access studio space, specialized equipment, and business education, including marketing strategies and financial guidance. By fostering an inclusive and supportive environment, BAC empowers artists to grow, collaborate, and succeed—ensuring that creativity remains a driving force for both cultural and economic development in Portsmouth.
Goals:
Create a sustainable, community-driven creative hub.
The Boneyfiddle Artist Collective (BAC) is dedicated to building a sustainable, community-driven creative hub that empowers local artists while strengthening Portsmouth’s cultural and economic landscape. By providing affordable studio space, accessible tools, and opportunities to sell and showcase work, BAC aims to remove the financial and logistical barriers that often prevent artists from pursuing their passions. A thriving arts community doesn’t just benefit individual creatives—it fosters collaboration, revitalizes local businesses, and attracts visitors who contribute to the city’s economic growth. Through a makerspace, gallery, storefront, and educational programs, BAC is laying the foundation for a self-sustaining creative network where artists support one another, share resources, and collectively build a more vibrant and prosperous Portsmouth.
Impact:
Economic and cultural growth for Portsmouth.
The Boneyfiddle Artist Collective (BAC) is dedicated to fostering economic and cultural growth in Portsmouth by investing in the creative community. The arts have the power to transform cities by attracting visitors, creating jobs, and strengthening local businesses. By providing artists with affordable studio space, opportunities to sell their work, and access to essential tools and education, BAC helps creatives build sustainable careers—contributing to the broader economic landscape. A thriving arts scene enhances Portsmouth’s cultural identity, making it a more vibrant and appealing place to live, work, and visit. Through community-driven initiatives like a makerspace, gallery, and artist workshops, BAC aims to revitalize the local economy while ensuring that creativity remains a driving force in Portsmouth’s future.
